Re: Run #2 - Between The Rock and a Hard Place
The ticket booths go by the window for the second time. The clock jumps and the drone feed glitches. He feels surprise as his arms move on their own to turn the wheel and put the van into a slide in an empty parking lot...
Axel squeezes his eyes shut. The clock, the stairs, the gunfire from the marina. All still there. He inhales and slows his pace, moving back to walk in step with Mouse.
"Hey, so this is a weird time for this, but... I'm not totally convinced that I'm in control of myself. Look, if I, I dunno, start shooting at the sky for no reason... " He demonstrates how to undo the clasp of the shoulder rig that the Rigger Command Console is hanging from. "I have it set to accept local control. Boot access is root access. Can you take over for me if I start acting strangely again?"

"…AGAIN?" Mouse blinks, clearly caught off guard by the request. At least for the decker, to trust an outsider with such critical gear bears a strange sense of intimacy, or at least completely unwarranted faith in their abilities.
Still, she finds herself nodding along in spite of herself. "I MEAN, YEAH. NULL SWEAT." She offers a thumbs up, as much to convince herself as anyone else. "PERSONALLY, I CAN'T SAY I'VE FELT CONTROL OVER MUCH OF ANYTHING SINCE WE LANDED." Her gaze casts upward to the sky, as if to scan for her prospective roto drone wards, or merely in a moment of pre-battle introspection. "BUT I'M PRETTY SURE YOU'VE SAVED MY HOOP AT LEAST TWICE NOW. LEAST I CAN DO IS WATCH YOURS, AND OFFER UP SOME EMERGENCY DRONE-SITTING SERVICES."

The main advance party of the enemy has gained a few meters of hard won ground. Zal and friends are putting up a valiant defense, but the decreasing frequency of their return fire suggests that ammunition supply is dwindling. Small geysers erupt from the sea on other side of the docks, like mini depth charges. The island's strike force is suppressing the far warehouse, in an attempt to keep the intruders from reaching the remaining boat.
Taipan's team has reached the halfway point on the switch-back stair, still unnoticed.
Mick nods at Achak and the two begin scrambling down the cliff-face. The going is slow. Achak is clearly not in prime condition and Mick is beginning to feel the effects of the stim patch wearing off. Still, both of them manage to retain their grip on the nearly sheer cliff face.
A sudden gust hauls in from the East, spreading the oil smoke across the docks and towards the team. Embers begin to rain down on the stair team, like some apocalyptic shower.
Taipan bats away the soot. << Once we're all on the level of the docks, we should mount a simultaneous attack. If Zal's crew hasn't run out of ordinance, we'll have them surrounded. >>

Axel cracks his first genuine smile since Bongoland. "Thanks," he says. Then his gaze turns serious. "You too?"
"It was that final drive in during the last job. It was like someone..." He rubs the scar tissue around his datajack and shudders, "jumped in to me. Or I blacked out. I can't explain it, and I've been keeping my head down ever since in case it happens again."
He checks the magazine on the Alta for the fifth time and scans the marina. "Hasn't happened again since we got here, so maybe it's time to stop hiding. Let's go be the best goddamn B-Team we can be."
A small knot of anxiety seems to loosen as he says that, even as the dread of impending combat settles in.

Thoryne pinches the windage disc on his scope, adjusting to the specifications provided by his smart-link. His cyberarm does a good job as a stabilizer, keeping the reticle in his vision plastered to the straggler in the advance party. The TacStar HUD in the corner of his vision keeps him apprised of the team's location.
<< Looks like you'll all hit the beach at the same time, >> he comms.
Taipan pulls the charging handle on his FN HAR and tucks the butt against his the crook of his shoulder. << I see the drones are in place, too. As soon as the last pair of boots hits the sand, let's get this party started. >>
A stray round collides with a mobile fuel cart on the far end of the dock-- an explosive round, presumably, as the whole device disintegrates in a giant fireball. The shockwave creates a radius of whitewater that flares at the periphery, appearing just before a cacophonous blast reaches the runners. Bits of flaming metal and composite begin to rain down on the battle-field.
Through Thoryne's enhanced vision, he catches a glimpse of Lafayette. The dwarf is wild-eyed, haggard, and spattered with blood. He leans around the side of the warehouse just long enough to squeeze off a burst at the advancing Imperial troops.
"Hang on omae," Thoryne mutters quietly. "We're coming."

An involuntary shudder snakes down the decker's spine from Axel's phrasing, combined with residual sense memory of that dark night in Bongoland. "DUNNO IF THAT’S REASSURING, THAT IT’S NOT JUST ME LOSING MY DREK. ONCE WE’RE CLEAR OF NEW FOLSOM, WE'LL HAVE TO SWAP GHOST STORIES." Any further niceties or deep thoughts are cut off by the spray of shrapnel and embers. Taking the hint, she swipes one grimy sleeve across her eyes, and cues up an ancient flatvid's score into the background noise of her consciousness. After all, what's a B-Team without its theme song?

Axel watches the movement of the teams through the bird's eye view of the drones. He spares a moment to open an AR window titled "Wetwork Bopz." Scrolling through the list he alights on a selection. Doing a little back-of-the-napkin math, he estimates the time until both teams reach the marina and engagement range. He queues up his selection to fire the moment the clock reaches zero, and assigns the two roto drones as left and right speaker, volume set to max.
He cracks a grin as he sees the seconds counting down next to "Bon Jovi - Runaway."

Not going out of my way to help…
Yung whispers under his breath as he runs, "Seriously, as if I’d expect it anyway; cut and run, that’s what it’s like with this kind."
He stops, measuring his breath as the exertion starts to catch up with him. He sets the doctor down, propping him up on one of the stairs. "They don’t know Doc, what it’s like to be part of a family, they don’t know or choose not to."
He narrows his eyes, looking from his vantage on the stairs towards the firefight, but really he’s looking past it. He’s back in the rain, on the dark Seattle night; she’s there too, laying on the pavement after the initial altercation.
"I’ll be fine," she says, "leave me here, you got this."
He shakes his head, bringing himself back to reality. "I promised never again..." He looks down at the unmoving form. "We had a good run, yeah?" He asks, pausing briefly for an answer.
"I appreciate all the help Doc." He says, clenching his jaw to stop it from quivering. "You’ll be fine," he reassures the unconscious form. "I got this," he says, standing back up before resuming his descent without his ward.
As he reaches a switchback he looks back one last time, wiping something from his eye with his sleeve.

Yung levels his Ares Predator at the enemy combatants as they come into view, several of them turning to address the ‘B’ team. One of the adversaries is unaware of the impending onslaught, Yung aims at the oblivious soldier but can’t bring himself to pull the trigger. Some deep rooted sense of honor prevents him from taking the shot, perhaps a callback to his martial arts training and Tio Paulo’s edict about attacking an unaware opponent.
He begins running towards the enemies. Making his way out onto the docks he once again draws down on the closest hostile that is aware of him. "This one’s for you Doc."

As Axel passes the discarded and still very much unconscious doctor, he pauses for a moment and purses his lips in thought. His eyes light up, and he reaches into a pocket and retrieves the little drink umbrella from the rancho. He delicately places the colorful concession stand decoration behind the doctor's ear. He steps back to admire his handiwork with mock affection.
"There you go sweetie. Never let anyone tell you you're not beautiful."
He turns back to the task at hand with a very outward show of grim determination.

On the other side of the marina, Wind launches forward and lays down a volley of fire indiscriminately. The enemy squad is forced to scatter, pinned down by the storm of bullets.
Achak lands nimbly next to Mick. Reading the ork's expression, he simply extends a hand. "Hold on tight." Anxious to enter the fray, Mick shrugs and clasps wrists with the Amerind mage. A strange guttural chant begins to reverberate from within Achak's throat.
A thunderclap of astral energy shakes the beach, tossing sand several meters skyward in a circle around them. Mick catches a glimpse of a blossom of energy arranged in the shape of wings protrude from Achak's back. Then, suddenly, they are airborne. The spell propels Achak-- and by extension, Mick-- high above the beach and on a direct trajectory for the docks. Mick tucks up their legs, in preparation for the landing. Their eyes water against the air resistance as they reach the apex of the mighty leap and begin to descend. As the docks race towards them, Mick realizes they are right behind the enemy squad.
Re: Run #2 - Between The Rock and a Hard Place
Mick lands gracelessly, a clamorous thud that rumbling through the dock as they catch themselves from falling entirely forward with their hands. Gravel bits from the dock bite into their palms like 7-grit sandpaper, scraping a set of yowling fissures into their flesh as they come to a ragged, sliding stop. The ork manages to shoot a glance at Achak, whose descent appears to have been comparatively graceful and dignified. Apparently this shit head mage's flare for dramatics was more important than sharing the plan in advance. The look on Mick's face reads like an endless smear of internet profanities, typed in all caps and riddled with harried, incensed typos.
But the adept's body moves on its own, turning them from Achak back to the attack squad. The ork rolls their right shoulder forward in a sharp, wide motion that swings the Ingram Smartgun off their back in an arc. Catching it in their scourged palms, the ork shoulders the stock and squeezes the trigger.

Mick blinks as a cloud of gunsmoke is blown into their face. In the duration of that blink, the Kuroikaze has closed the distance. The blade of a carbon-steel katana glints in the sunlight. Operating on pure instinct, Mick throws themselves towards the dock's surface. A whistling noise informs Mick that the katana has passed mere millimeters from the top of their head. The adept performs a quick hand-spring, re-orienting to see the katana at full extension-- a narrow escape.
Kojima, having witnessed Mick's aerial entrance, brandishes their shotgun towards Mick and fires. The blast blossoms outwards, an explosion of smoke, flame and titanium bearings. Mick-- already in motion-- jukes to the edge of the dock, avoiding most of the blast. A few of the bearings rip through their clothes and Mick feels a burning sensation as one of the projectiles grazes their hip. Mick recovers their balance, perched just at the edge, having sustained no permanent damage.
Re: Run #2 - Between The Rock and a Hard Place
Reiya sees the fight begin and immediately reaches for her crossbow. She loads one of the barbed arrowheads and aims for the thigh of an enemy fighter still relatively distant from Mick and Achak.

Whirlwind passes its sibling, zig-zagging along a parallel course. The drone directs a full torrent of hot lead at Ohara. The bullets riddle the soldier, many of which penetrate the armor. Blood spatters against the docks, curdling with the sea foam from the Pacific ocean.
Luis aims his pistol and fires a shot at Kojima, but the shot is wide and strikes the ocean's surface.
Re: Run #2 - Between The Rock and a Hard Place
Taipan watches the carnage and chaos bloom on the battlefield, his keen eye following the mad explosion of violence with the patience and attention to detail of a bonsai master. He watches the manic flow of attacks and defenses, all occurring in a split-second dance of action-reaction. Whirlwind's volley of lead opens up a smeared portal of gore across the world, and for the briefest moment Taipan imagines the soldier falling backward into it and disappearing into a bottomless, sanguine abyss. The samurai-turned-mercenary squeezes the stock of rifle a few spare foot-pounds of pressure deeper into the meaty depression of his shoulder, flicks the mode selector to full-auto, and endeavors to send the reeling soldier– one whom it's no terrible stretch of the imagination to think could have been a comrade of Taipan's under different circumstances– off into that crimson, cloying abyss.

Axel's heart pounds as he passes the last few steps without touching them. Pride blooms as Whirlwind strikes a decisive blow. His attention snaps back to the soldiers still standing. He lines up on Kojima, and a reticle appears in Axel's vision, his cybereyes and pistol working together to provide an estimated point of impact. He breathes in, lets the breath out, and squeezes three rapid shots at the beleaguered soldier.

The din of gunfire, the smoke, the polyrhythmic thuds of her pulse in her chest and her own stumbling footfalls, all clamor to dominate the decker’s functioning senses. Yet, like a bolt of neon in the dark, it's the beat of glorious rapidfire synth that injects a shock of 80s glam metal into the surrounding sturm und drang and captures her attention. In a singular, fluid motion, Mouse slips her hands into her sweatshirt pockets and slips on a pair of earbuds, allowing her to quite literally filter out the cacophony of the automatic fire, and to focus on what's really important.
Once again, she spreads out her fingers, filling the digital space around her with a vector framework, pinpointing the sources of the gunshots, their projected ranges, and the radius of imminent danger in the space surrounding the Kuroikaze.
(( I am the Firewall : Axel, Taipan, Thoryne, Yung, and Herself. Technically, she can also reach one other friendly (anyone on Zal’s Crew?) if she has any kind of digital access for them. ))

Advancing forward, Yung’s eyes narrow as the semi-transparent barrier forms into existence. He feels the slightest sensation of anger at the most recent development, although he can devote neither time nor thought to understanding why. Bottom line is, there is now a very tangible thing preventing the ‘B’ team from their rendezvous and rescue.
Somewhere among the vast web of neurons firing within his skull a subconscious chain of thoughts guides his movements. An unfulfilled desire derived from watching too many action trids. When the protagonist is angry it’s best to turn your gun sideways to illustrate that anger, it’s also more effective. He resets his sights on Pvt. Agawa.

Mick sways on the edge of the dock as it's rocked by repeated referent impacts, just barely aware of the barrier slamming down around them, enveloping them in an astral prison with two very surly guards. Part of the ork recognizes how bad it'll be if either of these two get the upper hand while they're alone in here with them, but the notion is irrelevant; Mick's actions carry forward just the same.
It's everything the adept can do not to throw the weapon down and engage the Kuroikaze hand-to-hand– up close and personal and manual, just as has been their preference since one gloomy evening in a blood-streaked suburban Seattle bathroom. But Mick has felt what it's like to punch their armor and feel it absorb every bit of what the ork's got. In all their years on the run, on the streets, getting by on sharp wits and bloodied mitts, Mick has never felt so impotent.
But it doesn't matter. None of that drek matters right now. All that matters is carving a bloody fraggin' path through the rest of these fascist cunts and getting off this fraggin' rock.
The weapon, still so counter to their bedrock nature, thrums heavily into the meat of their shoulder as the ork unleashes a spray of world-ending lead, the heady pestilence oozing from them in hungry tendrils, licking forward as if drill their own burrows into the bloodied Kuroikaze.

Mick eases up on the trigger, letting the muzzle drop until it's pointing square at the Kuroikaze dominating their vision. This time, they fire a simple burst, aiming for the weak points in the substantial armor. The rounds impact on the hardened exterior, barely missing the narrow gap.
Wind pitches from side to side, continuing to scatter the dock with suppressing fire. Although, Axel notes that the ammo counter is dipping into the red.
Achak-- trapped on the other side of the barrier-- executes a sort of halting dance. Thin tongues of astral energy lick around him, crackling and sizzling. He heaves back and then steps forward, slamming his palm into the shimmering barrier. The barrier pulses, surges, and then shatters.
Okami renews his grip on the katana and slices down, aiming for the Uzi in Mick's grasp. In response, Mick leans back. The razor-sharp katana clips the end of the charging handle clean off, but fails to destroy the weapon.
Lt. Kojima turns his rifle on Yung. Yung, still holding his Predator out, fails to notice. As Kojima's tightens his finger on the trigger, Mouse's firewall program beams a warning to Yung. Through Yung's contacts, Kojima is suddenly silhouetted in glaring crimson. Instinctively, Yung sways to the side. The burst from Kojima's gun punches through the Vashon Island coat, forming a trio of tears along Yung's side, exposing the kevlar weave beneath. Fortunately for Yung, no real damage is done.

Whirlwind rotates and opens fire on Furuya. The soldier is riddled with bullets, splattering the deck with blood and gore. His mutilated carcass collapses on the docks-- his face frozen in a rictus of agony.

Re: Run #2 - Between The Rock and a Hard Place
Once again, the battlefield is cast in a webwork of crimson hues, lending structure and semi permanence to the samurai's strategic calculations. Cold, raw numbers interplay with honed battlefield instinct and tempered emotion.
The chaos distills into four articulated vectors of attack. There's the soldiers in the kiosk, presumably preoccupied and unreachable in their current state. Then there's the lone reservist still standing, albeit injured. That leaves the big two: one known threat, the heavily armored example of the general's finest, whose katana has lingered seemingly millimeters from his compatriot's throat… and the unknown threat, currently besieged by Wind's dwindling fire, but capable of separating out members of his team to be picked off by the former. Even with the barrier dispersed for now, Taipan can't deny the residual fury simmering in his core, from the mage's attempt at further separating the team.
As he draws the sights of the FN HAR upon the enemy mage, he muses that there's sound reasoning behind the old adage. Geek that one first.
(( Disregard previous "correction." Just going to simple action release the trigger as Taipan keeps moving forward, simple action FA against the mage. ))

Axel smiles in satisfaction as Whirlwind avenges her sibling, taking out the soldier that shot at Wind. A rapid series of blasts brings him back to the more immediate battle. Axel sees Agawa stumble under Taipan's withering fire, and the command to press the attack does not need to be said aloud. He lines up on the stricken mage, and adds three of his own shots to the chorus.
