At the 18th floor, the team stops for a break. Even the heavily cybernetically enhanced Max has to double over and collect himself. The Phalanx suits contract around throbbing muscles, physically wicking out sweat which collects in the form of tiny salt crystals on the surface of the future-armor.

A distant scraping sound interrupts the team mid-pant, forcing everyone to freeze and strain to listen in the stillness.

Tension thickens the air to a soup and Max feels as though he might drown in it. Marlowe Mk. II points the way toward the apparent source of the sound, its steady aim refusing to betray the anxiety roiling within the elf. Even in the moment, Max has a moment to reflect inwardly that it would have saved the team a significant amount of exhaustion and time had Tyros simply levitated them up the shaft in the center of the stairwell.

Doc runs a gloved hand over the strange texture of the sector wall. Indeed, there appears to be a sort of hatch embedded in front of him. He marvels silently at the advanced engineering. His musings suggest that a strong enough electrical pulse could trigger whatever mechanism operates the hidden doorway.

The wet slapping sounds of bare feet on concrete are suddenly disturbingly close. A shower of sparks rains down from the floor above as something jagged tears across the wall, accompanied by the faintest flicker of a humanoid silhouette. The speed with which the object moves is so fast that alpha team is left to wonder if perhaps they had just imagined a body to accompany the flurry of light.

Chills run through the three assembled as the piercing sound reverberates downward through the concrete shaft, seeming to gain a terrorizing power before it fades. The brief silence thereafter is promptly punctuated by something that can't quite be considered a voice, sounding more like a pair of ribbed steel cords being pulled together.

"F l e s h."

Adams thoughtfully withdraws his hand from the wall, impressed that Haywire was able to spot the seam without already knowing it was there. He opens a pouch on his suit, and with a couple of quick jerks, dislodges a metal cylinder.

"We don't have enough time to do this properly," he says, glancing at Haywire and Sinjin. "I think we might be able to crack it if we induce a current across the mechanism keeping it closed. I hope."

He shrugs, and points at his commlink. "Electronics off," he says, giving the small team enough time to shut down their equipment. He releases the safety, and strikes the electronic fuse of the EMP grenade, tossing it at the base of the hidden hatch.

"Knock, knock."

The barrel of Val's rifle plays erratically over the decker's surroundings. In the sudden silence, his own breathing is near painfully loud in his own ears.

"Oh frag this."

Feet planted in a combat stance, his eyes dart around wildly in an attempt to reacquire what is clearly a mortal threat.

Adams averts his eyes from the grenade's initial flare. He catches a faint whiff of ozone that makes it past his helmet's scrubbers. The sound of well-oiled components hum almost imperceptibly from within the wall and a faint rectangle appears on the surface. A subtle click follows and the panel swings open, revealing a shaft leading downwards into darkness.

A shadowy figure materializes at the top of the stairs that lead to the next floor. A shroud of some kind has been wrapped around the bulk of the creature. The parts that are visible are thin, grayish limbs crawling with raised sinew and protruding dermal plates. Beneath a tattered hood, a grinning cyber-skull surveys the team. The eyes set in the gruesome visage are clearly transplanted and their presence in the artificial cranium is highly disturbing. A blade--longer than Six's--dangles almost carelessly, attached to the thing's right arm.

The grating, baritone voice slithers from behind a toothless mouth.

"P r i n c e?"

Using the butt of his rifle, Adams pushes the panel the rest of the way open, gazing into the vertical shaft with enhanced senses. He picks up a piece of rubble about the size of a pebble, and drops it down the shaft, counting the seconds before it hits the bottom.

Satisfied with his highly accurate scientific measurements, Adams eases himself onto the ladder.

"Well, these tunnels aren't going to clear themselves," he says, just before his head dips out of view.

The day is going from bad to worse. It might be time for the team to cut its losses. Tyros has seen Six go through a Legion army like a hot knife through butter and doesn't fancy a diminished FSRS squad's chances.

Taking a couple slow steps backwards, "gentlemen, I've read that the most important skill of a mercenary is to know when to run away..."

At the sound of Tyros' boot scraping against the concrete, the creature begins a steady advance down the stairs. A sparking fluorescent light glares off of a plastic tag on the backside of a monstrous cyber-hand, bearing the number 5.

Doc's boots squelch unpleasantly as he drops the last meter to the tunnel floor. Oily groundwater collects along the treads of his combat boots. Above him, Haywire eases down the rusted rungs, followed closely by the noiseless Sinjin. Ahead of him, the twisted pitch nether of the subterranean access network.

No, that would just be a quick burst, and then it's done.

Haywire lowers her hand and shakes her head. She shifts aside as the muscular adept drops in next to her, surveying the tunnel with the wide-eyed excitement of a pubescent stuck in a grown-up's body.

"Not a clue. I'll keep an eye out for astral activity, though. I should probably bring up the rear."

Gingerly raising a sludge encrusted boot for inspection, Sinjin sniffs the air and grimaces. His keen night sight reveals the contour of the tunnel for some distance until it disappears, hidden by the shadows of the underworld.

"Stinks." he mutters brusquely, snapping the lid of his face shield down.

Eyeing the holo-clock glowing faintly in the corner of his HUD, he radios a brief status update to Alpha. Puzzled when no response crackles back through the airwaves, he prays the radio silence is a necessity of their stealthy mission and not a sign that they are in trouble.

"Well Peters, lets go a' piping, and see what manner of rats live down here." he says quietly, dilated eyes flicking about the darkness as he sets off down the corridor.

Val feebly attempts to steady his grip on the FN HAR as his mind wars with itself over whether to initiate hostile action. One part of him knows they have to, and the other part knows that they'll all die if they do. The shaking barrel of his weapon drifts slowly upward seemingly of its own accord; the man that he is, for the moment, overshadowing the boy that he was. The motion falters just before drawing a bead on Five. Val pries his tongue from the roof of his arid mouth as he comms to Alpha.

The tunnels plumb the depths of the earth, reaching further and deeper than Doc would have imagined possible. The three comrades stalk through the dank, claustrophobic and labyrinthine confines of the tunnels as they seek out their next target. Time loses meaning without any point of reference, the team having to rely instead on the glowing time stamps in the periphery of their combat visors.

A few kilometers in, the bleak atmosphere is pierced by an intermittent grinding sound.

Haywire stiffens up.

"What the frag is that?"

Five pauses near the foot of the stairs, raising his ragged hand-blade slowly. The cyber zombie vanishes, reappearing next to the team--his movements far too fast to follow even with augmented vision. He is a shadow, dancing in the dark.

Val's finger begins to tighten reflexively on the trigger of his HVAR, but he realizes with grim detachment that his reactions will not be fast enough. Time seems to slow as the blade slips towards his exposed carotid.

...and then stops a dozen centimeters from Val's neck. A shower of sparks erupt from thin air and a golden ripple wavers where Five's blade encounters an astral barrier.

A golden half-dome appears around Val as Tyros switches to astral vision. The troll's eyes follow a wisp of astral energy up the stairwell. An older elf, his face framed in silver hair and tense with concentration is looking over the railing a few floors above. His hand is stretched out in empty space, tracing small circles in the air and his lips move in a silent chant.

Meeting Tyros' gaze, the man calls out.

"I can't sustain this spell for long. Run!"

After a nanosecond of refusing to obey, Val's rubbery legs finally spring into action as he spins past Legion's latest abomination. His eyes linger on the wicked blade as he darts past. An involuntary shiver almost makes him stumble as he races up the stairs toward the elf, drawing ragged breaths every step of the way.

Sinjin crouches instictively, muscled tensed in primal response to the something moving nearby. Fingers twitch and close around the grips of the throwing knives protruding from the belted sheath around his thigh. A tiny glint as the blades pull free, the sound of steel on soft leather a whisper in the darkness.

The gray-haired elf manages a curt nod as the team pounds up the stairs to him. As they draw closer, it's apparent that the prince is wearing a set of blood-stained ceremonial robes over a simple gray suit. His haggard disposition suggests that the elf has been fighting for some time.

"Follow that corridor. My men are just beyond. We'll have to lure him into an ambush to stand any chance at all."

His voice wavers with tension as he maintains the barrier spell.

The big troll's heavy footsteps pound past the beleaguered prince. Tyros fight or flight mechanism is going full tilt and at that instant, the instinct to flee seems to be winning. At least getting behind some of the prince's guards will put some bodies between Five and the team - perhaps their deaths will buy them the opening they need to either kill it or escape...

Bravo team freezes and strains to listen for tell-tale noises of a pursuer beyond the intermittent sound of dropping water. The tunnel stretches beyond their vision, resembling the interior of a corroded vein. From the echoing characteristics of the noise, it's likely it originated from around the corner of one of the ubiquitous junctions. After what seems like an endless moment of adrenaline-laced dread, a croaking resembling a voice seems to ooze out of every nefarious crevice in the tunnel walls.

Adams grits his teeth, and hunches his shoulders as if warding off an assault.

"Probably just a Legion grunt with a voice modulator trying to get in our heads," he says, not believing a word. With a silent command, the arachnae drones skitter up the walls and attach themselves to the ceiling, taking point.

Against his better judgement, Adams gestures down the tunnel, skillwire enhanced feet stepping silently and moving him toward whatever waits for the team.

Every hair on Sinjin's taught skin jolts upright. The voice, like dry snake-skin rasped along a rusty metal chain, chills the blood in his veins, shocking his heart with a thunderclap that reverberates out to his fingertips. Instinctively his arm reaches out, pulling Haywire protectively behind him against the wall. Pointing to his eyes with spread fingers, he stares hard until mage nods in understanding: Watch, and be ready. As Doc stalks into the shadows, Sinjin swallows hard and follows after.

Max snaps out of his daze and a rush of senses flood in on him. The world is a mess of sights as he reawakens within himself mid-run. Debris from the endless battles that have been waged here crunches under his boots like snow. Everybody is yelling. He catches up to the Prince and shakes the numbness from his head, making eye contact with the elf as he does. His inclination is to push the Prince along as they flee, but Max's doesn't know if altering the Prince's line of sight will affect the spell he's sustaining. As Val goes rushing by, Overstreet shouts over the panic, "Come on! We're here to get you to safety!"

Tyros flings himself at the stairwell door, crashing through and stumbling into a well-appointed foyer area. The floor is polished marble and the walls gilded in precious metals. A sparkling chandelier hangs from the vaulted ceilings, swinging slightly from reverberations of intermittent artillery. A firing squad raises their weapons as the team pours in, culminating in a moment of tense hesitation. The demeanor changes as the Prince follows and the assembled guardsmen lower the barrels.

Kelseth moves with a spryness that defies his aged appearance. He leaps to the rear corner of the room, raising clawed hands up in preparation for his next spell.

"Prepare yourselves! This won't be an easy victory!"
