Haywire casts a sideways glance as the stocky Sinjin enters the car and takes a seat beside her. The glacier blue of her eyes roam the ork's thigh, picking out the bandolier of wicked looking throwing knives. She un-clips a black steel cylinder that resembles a baton from her hip and twirls it in her hand.

"I'll show you mine, if you show me yours."

(( Wow you guys moved fast today. Nice work ninjas. BTW Nick...you might have an outdated character sheet for Sinjin..his AGI has been 6 for awhile..))

Sinjin's cheeky grin is a match to the blonde fireball's own as he gives her a humorously blatant once over, deciding to play along with her good-natured innuendo. Slowly, he withdraws a long double edged knife, gives it a quick flip, and catches it balanced standing upright on the tip of his index finger.

"Twice tempered, tungsten-steel alloy head. Guaranteed to penetrate." he says with a wink.

Haywire barks a laugh before turning away to stare ahead out the window with a smile.

The interior of the car smells like rotted rubber bands and suspiciously like someone left a carton of take out sushi under the seat...about a decade ago. Rolling down a window for some ocean air, Sinjin hangs an arm outside and, rapping on the door, calls out to Doc.

"Lets roll!"

The soft thump of the Ford's doors unlocking is the loudest sound in the lot, slightly startling the AR-immersed decker. He gives an amused shake of his head, a slight twitch of a smile alighting the corner of his mouth as he stands and pops the passenger door open. He shoots a grin to Max and Tyros, who've been patiently waiting nearby.

"Shotgun."

He climbs in the door and closes it softly before clicking on his seatbelt. Safety first, he thinks wryly.

One of the back door's of Val's newly appropriayed car opens and the rear sinks considerably into its shocks before it closes again with a clank. The car rocks side to side as if something extoadinarily heavy is rolling around in the backseat.

"Ok, I'm in, but lets hope this ride is short because my legs are already tingling and I don't want them to cramp before we get to the prince."

Doc pulls the steering wheel to lock forcing the Westwind's rear to come dangerously close to overtaking its nose. His forearms bulge as he steadies the vehicle amidst the rapidly melting rubber. The car regains traction mere seconds before slamming into the curb and fish-tails through a cloud of tire smoke. He rakes the deserted streets with his eyes, desperately seeking an avenue of escape.

"There!" Haywire's voice is husky--strained with adrenaline.

Reaching down, Doc lifts the handbrake. The Westwind's rear swings around, leaving a contrail of smoke, glass and what looks like the vehicle's rear quarter panel in a parabola tracing the trajectory of the power slide. The steering wheel spins again in a counter steer, and the shuddering Westwind lurches into compliance. Haywire uncoils and turns, peering through the crystalline remnants of the rear window. Doc imagines her eyes are the size of dinner plates.

"Did we lose it?"

The combat mage's question is answered in the form of a geyser of flaming asphalt a meter from the car. Doc swerves violently and swears as a volley of molten debris pelts the windshield. His eyes dart to the rear-view mirror. The SK-Scorpion light tank that has been pursuing them rolls into firing range, a plume of vapors escaping the barrel of its main gun.

The Americar hums quietly as Max switches into neutral and idles alongside the perimeter wall of sector 5. The elf nudges the side-view mirror so that he can examine the monolithic structure from within the safety of the vehicle. He narrows his eyes, gazing through a lazy tendril of cigarette smoke at the sheer expanse of carbon black hecto-steel threatening to pierce the sky. According to Clark, the walls are a uniform 30 meters tall, 20 meters deep, and coated in a slick polymer to discourage climbing. A track runs across the top, routinely patrolled by border guards, rotodrones, and--most worrisome--astral entities.

Max flicks the smoldering filter against a dumpster, watching as it collides in a small shower of glittering embers. He pulls the side-view mirror towards him so that he can unobtrusively inspect the crossing station that serves as a tunnel through the wall. Though obfuscated by a sprawl of parked military vehicles, he can make out the periphery of the heavily fortified entrance-way. A ferro-carbon gate, large enough to accommodate a passenger jet, remains closed to prevent access to the contested sector. A dozen or so Tir security men are clustered in front of it, warily watching the surrounding city block.

The elf massages his temples. Two options of ingress, neither by any means particularly attractive. He glances over his shoulder. Val is squinting up at the wall, though whether absorbed in thought or perusing the local digital space the elf has no idea. A large depression in the rear seat indicates where the team's mage is seated. Though he sees nothing but the back of the car, Max imagines he's making eye contact with Tyros. He's fairly sure they both wear the same solemn, dubious expression.

Adams spins the wheel again, taking the car into a narrow alleyway. Trash cans whip by, centimeters away from the side view mirrors as the Westwind careens down the narrow passage.

Well, this is going well.

He shouts without turning his head, "Sinjin! Open the two smaller dry bags!"

He sends a mental command to the two spider drones to plant themselves in the rear of the car, targeting the tank through the shattered rear window.

At least all this heavy driving seems to have cleared out the pipes, he thinks as the car responds more firmly to his inputs than it did when he first started it.

The Westwind hops a curb on one side, eliciting an ear-piercing shriek and sending out a cavalcade of sparks from the undercarriage as it encounters concrete. Doc bounces in his seat, making quick adjustments with his arms to avoid slamming the car into either side of the alley.

Haywire yelps and recoils, glaring at the octopedal machine gun crawling underneath her to gain purchase near the rear of the car. She squirms in between the driver and passenger seat, one arm behind Doc's head as she attempts to crawl to the available seat. Her face is contorted in concentration as she continues to sustain her sorcery.

"This is some drek righthere," the elf groans. His eyes scan over the front gate, flick back to the mirror and glide over the hardly comprehensible wall, and settle again on the front gate. "I don't see any way for use up that wall. Even once we get up there, Tyros's glowing astral presence is gonna sound the alarm on us in a heartbeat." The elf sighs deeply and narrows his eyes at the gate, before asking, "You guys ever feel like you took a major wrong turn somewhere along the line?" Max doesn't wait for a response, quickly moving on with, "Can you find anything out from here, Val? It's either that or I cruise by the gate just to test the waters..." Max searches his understanding of what kind of security the team is likely to encounter as he trails off.

Max withdraws a flattened pack of Alpaca 100's from his vest pouch and shakes it, watching the scant few smokes left roll around inside. He knows from experience that the skeleton crew at the transfer station is there to keep civilians from entering. The bulk of the forces will be on the other side, repelling the invaders. Any non-hostile confrontation with the Tir forces is likely to result in a minor interrogation, probably a stern warning to stay clear. He knows that the Phalanx armor won't help. While it's unlikely they'll be mistaken as Legion troops, the Tir defense has to be wound up pretty tight. Without credentials, getting through will be extremely unlikely.

Adams grips the wheel as the car shoots out of the alley like a champagne cork, cranking the wheel and using the handbrake to fishtail the car into the street's perpendicular orientation. He checks the rearview mirror for signs of the tank that had surprised them only minutes ago.

They weren't supposed to be this far into the city already, he thinks, before mentally chastising himself for thinking that anything in this situation would happen as it's "supposed to."

His eyes scan the empty street ahead, looking for another narrow passage that might help the small team lose the pursuing dreadnaught. The street is littered with trash and abandoned vehicles, and the signs of a hasty evacuation are present everywhere. Boarded up doors and windows go by in a blur as the long-sleeping engine of the Westwind roars in rediscovered vitality.

With his stomach somewhere near his throat, Sinjin lets out a whooping laugh as Doc's wild ride sends them careening across the asphalt in a white knuckle rally through the back streets of Portland. His adrenaline is peaking, and his accelerated heart rate has flushed his cheeks and the tips of his ears a ruddy pink. The plastic passenger side "oh-drek" bar, which promptly tore free of is fastening, is discarded through a blown out window and now skitters and bounces frantically up the street behind them along with other pieces of disturbed garbage and the last of the Westwind's hub-caps. How Adams has managed to retain any reasonable control of the antiquated vehicle is a wonder.

Straining against the seatbelt, Sinjin grimaces as the G-forces of the moving car pin the dry bags to the far side of the vehicle. His fingertips probe uselessly against the rubberized canvas surface, just able to touch it but unable to gain a fast enough grip to pull it closer. The car lists heavily, surely at its threshold traction and cornering speed as Doc engages another hellish maneuver. Drifting past the exit apex, the chassis shudders briefly before settling, spilling the baggage back toward Sinjin's outstretched hand. Pulling it close, he quickly unrolls the water-fast duffels and inspects their contents.

Yelling over the cacophony, "Okay, Doc! Whats the prescription?"

The contents of the open drybags move themselves out of their own accord, the twin spider drones taking up position to the rear of the car, waiting for the tank to come into view.

Adams shouts over the cold wind blowing in the car through the shattered windows, "Depends on how adventurous you're feeling! Check my pack, there're a few bricks of high grade plastic explosive and some detonators. I'm going to see if we can get far enough ahead to lay a trap. Otherwise we can toss some out the window, and hope they run over it. Or... Use your imagination!"

Val peers out the window at the Tir guardsmen, his magnified vision attempting to pick out if any of them seems to be carrying a tablet computer, or whether there's a guard station nearby that contains a clearance database.

"Might be able to figure something out, but it'll take me a few minutes to sort through these nodes for some kind of clearance list. There's a hell of a lot of nodes out here--and this being a war zone, there's a drekload of traffic everywhere. I'll see what I can find, though."

Val lets his AR feed illuminate his vision behind the closed lids of his eyes. He watches, and guides, his avatar through the storm of digital traffic, detecting and analyzing nodes which surround the vicinity of the gate like snowflakes in a whiteout.

Tyros shifts uncomfortably in what would be a backseat with ample leg room for even a tall human. Cursing silently to himself his mind jumps to his comrades on the other team and hopes their encounter with the enemy armor is going more smoothly their alpha teeam's with friendly security.

"Why do we always forget to ask for letters of introduction? Max, why don't you just go explain to those guards who we are and that we are here to help. They should see reason right?"

Casting his eyes around at the massive defenses, the troll adds, "Gotta say, it doesn't seem like the prince needs much rescuing in there. Did we get the right address?"

Max shakes his head, and responds,

"Nah, I don't think that's gonna fly during wartime. 'Hey guys, we're here to see the Prince. We're on your side-- honest.' No security team worth its weight in drek is gonna go for that no matter how true it is or persuasive I am. We need to find a way to get in undetected in our primary mission. I'm thinking if Val can't us in with spoofed IDs, we can try to beat up a couple of Tir guards, steal their uniforms, and slip in like a couple of storm troopers."

The Westwind skids to an abrupt stop as Doc reaches an impromptu road block at the end of a private drive. The picturesque suburb surroundings provide a stark contrast to the reality of their situation. Haywire untangles herself from the front seat and glances nervously over her shoulder at the ork going through the drybags like they're Christmas presents.

"I don't know about you guys, but I think we'd have a better chance on foot. We can take cover more easily and split up if need be."

She rubs her forehead with a grimace.

"Then I can drop this vehicle mask spell, too."

As he always does, the avatar extends his hand and produces a ray-trace of golden light. Computations and packet handshakes process at billions of operations per second behind the colorful, holographic facade. Val's scan program neatly correlates the results and displays them in the form of ghostly letters in the center of his vision. The relevant nodes belong to each soldier's commlink respectively, each of the military vehicles, and one belonging to the massive gate in the transfer station.

Val's eyes blink away the afterimage as he opens his eyes and his AR feed dims to almost full transparency. His brow is furrowed in thought and a frown creases the corners of his mouth. Getting in without access to a clearance list will be difficult, but not impossible. A plan begins to take shape in the decker's mind.

"There's no terminal or device here that would be terribly likely to hold a clearance list. I've acquired the gate node, so we've got a chance to get it open, but we still need to deal with the guards. I'm thinking a little distraction and infiltration might get us through. I can hold subscriptions to the gate and one of those military vehicles, which should have a decent pilot program, simultaneously. I can make it look like the vehicle's being stolen, which will likely pull most if not all of the guards off that gate. We can deal with whoever's left, and I can open the gate. We should try to use non-lethal means against these guys, we'll get enough heat from Legion as it is."

Val grimaces. There are plenty of opportunities for things to go badly with this, but it's likely the best he can do with what he's got to work with. He turns to the rest of Alpha Team.

"If you guys have a better plan, I'm all ears."

Val cranks up the opacity of his AR feed once again, and analyzes the gate and vehicle nodes to get a better idea of what he's up against. (( Scan & Firewall ratings ))

Adams steps out of the car, and opens the rear door to retrieve his gear. His pack, rifle, and SMG all slung in their customary positions, he picks up the Arbalest II by its carry handle. With his free hand, he points at the two spider drones.

"You and you, follow us. Standard targeting perameters; shoot at anyone who shoots at us. Stay close."

The street is drenched in gloom, with only a handful of the customary streetlights bravely cutting small slices through the darkness. Storefronts stand borded up and grated over, looking like corpses that didn't have the common sense to fall down.

"Okay Haywire, what did you have in mind?"

Tyros' view of the world shifts into an amber wire-frame. Immediately, the mage is struck by the amount of astral activity in the city. Signatures abound everywhere in great tantalizing spirals of energy. He makes a mental note that assensing within the city limits will prove difficult. From the troll's limited vantage point in the vehicle, he can't make out the top of the wall. At the very least, there are no watcher spirits within line of sight.

Haywire exits the vehicle, stepping carefully over the two spider drones that are milling about after Doc. She flashes a bemused expression.

"They're like deadly, retarded puppies."

The combat mage sighs with obvious relief as she stops sustaining the spell that had thus far kept them from being obliterated.

Doc looks up at the skyline and turns, orienting himself towards a long row of apartment buildings. Despite being thrown off course in the chase, they're only a handful of city blocks from the convoy.

Standing in the intersection, Sinjin's arm snaps up, holding his palm out behind him in a signal to remain quiet. His head cocks a little this way, then a bit that way as he cups his hand to an ear. Large incisors shine in the streetlight as his jaw waggles to and fro. His eyes narrow, then twinkle knowingly.

"Nice navigating, Doc. Convoys rolling by a block thatta-way." he says confidently, pointing down the forlorn road.

Hefting the large black dry bag, he slips into the shadows and motions the others toward him.

In a fraction of a second, the light of the halogen lamps and the glow of the dashboard fade into the night, which in turn fades to nothingness with their absence. Val's eyelids drift downward without closing completely.

From the vacuum, a pinprick of light reaches out to the 5hade, enveloping him in a landscape brimming with color and light and sound as virtual sensory data pours into his existence. He peers through the static at the gate's node, a wall of electrified light, before turning to a row of nodes he recognizes as Tir military vehicles. He flits up to the one furthest from the gate node, laying a hand gently on the surface. Lines of code sear through Val's mind as the sim-module processes the seemingly endless input milliseconds at a time. His mind comprehends them just as quickly, searching only for a weakness.

A grim spectre in the black and white field of moonlit rubble, Sinjin listens intently to the nearby rumble of an armored motorcade as vehicles churn the pavement in their passing. After a moment, he considers Doc's words and nods in agreement.

"I think your right. We can use their numbers to our advantage, if we create the right situation. Bottle 'em up, and we limit their maneuverability as well as their lines of fire. I think we've got two options." he says, spreading two fingers over his open palm to illustrate his next words. "We could try to take the perimeter vehicles simultaneously, pinning them on both flanks while we hit them one by one down the line." His index finger now draws a line across the center of his palm. "Or we could take the center first, splitting their forces and reducing their tactical options with an obscuring debris field and heavy smoke."

He looks from Doc to Haywire, continuing "In either case, if we keep close to their chests then I think the risk of blue-on-blue fire may, to some extent, eliminate their option to use heavy cannon. And Ive got enough thermal smokes to keep their machine guns guessing as we move."

He pauses to rub at his forehead, looking shyly between the two shadowed faces before him. "But what do I know. Im a street kid who grew up taking punches, not military theory classes. There's probably six fraggin' manuals on how to protect a convoy from guerilla attacks. You two have the uniforms...what would they be ready for?"

Adams flashes Sinjin an almost feral grin, "I believe that this situation calls for a heaping dose of high explosives," he says, trying to picture the layout of the streets, and the armored vehicles moving through them.

"Now, Legion has just arrived here, and while the Tir are in rough shape, they probably haven't yet resorted to true partisan tactics. There's still some semblance of a formal military fighting against Legion, and the really underhanded stuff won't have begun yet. This gives us a small advantage, as the Legion troops will be watching out for a more formal, traditional attack."

He starts moving out toward the street, keeping an abandoned vehicle between him and the distant Scorpion. Scanning the ground, he finds what he's looking for: a large round steel plate bearing an inscription, Dump no waste. Drains to ocean.

"If we can get under them, we can catch 'em with their pants down."

Somewhere, years ago, in an office without windows, a programmer spilled his coffee. This isolated incident may seem insignificant on a greater scale, but to the programmer it was a catastrophe. So much so that he yelled a profanity and immediately went to the washroom. In completing this series of seemingly innocuous actions, the programmer forgot about a certain piece of code he was working on--namely, a piece of code that had to do with securing firmware upgrade procedures. In the end, the software went on to production without being fully completed. The QA staff had received a number of layoffs shortly before and so no one caught it.

Stat1C shakes his virtual head. He can't imagine how such sloppy programming happens, but he certainly can't let it go unpunished. The decker inserts a single line of code into the modified firmware file in his chip and forces an upload, which generates an additional user in the list of approved operators.

Haywire follows Doc's gaze to the manhole.

"This gives a whole new meaning to in the drek."

The mage bites her lip, a pensive expression darkening her face.

"I'm not the infiltrator that you and Sinjin are. What if I approach the convoy from the streets, find a high place, and create a distraction? I can whip up some ball lightning, send them into a frenzy."

Tyros watches Val's limp body and imagines those slack features on his own face when he goes astral. Scary.

<"Even if we distract the physical guards, are there not a hundred cameras that will spot us as we try to sneak through? You gotta disable all those too, Val.>"
